Charlie - The Spay/Houston Diving Dog!

While Spay/Houston was out in the community doing a community education project, we found little Charlie tied to a pole in the middle of a black top parking lot.  It was 98 degrees outside and the poor little guy was having a hard time just standing up.  We took him back to the clinic where we found that his little back was so infected that when we shaved him, his skin came off.  He cried and cried.  He was in so much pain.  Well, the Executive Director adopted him and the "little" guy is now 90 pounds of seriously handsome Great Dane/pitty mix.  He's got a racing stripe scar, thanks to his abuse, but Charlie is now training as the Spay/Houston Dock Dog!  We are very excited that he jumps like a little maniac.  You can follow his progress on the Spay/Houston Facebook and Charlie's personal Facebook page.  What an awesome dog!

Charlie was in his first diving competition at Pet Fest in Old Town Spring.  He wasn't the best, but he had the most fun!  Charlie scored "1st Place Novice" in the 2nd Wave.  His handler was informed by multiple handlers that her throwing was an issue, but his diving was awesome!  She is now working on her throwing arm!  Charlie was calm, cool and collected for about the first 15 minutes.  All of a sudden it was like a light bulb went off.  He looked up and realized that all of the dogs were DIVING!  He's used to an hour at Rummy's every Monday of straight diving and not having to wait in line.  He "cheered" LOUDLY every time a dog would dive.  Once he realized where the water was, it was all down hill from there!  They tried doing things the right way... throwing the toy, releasing the dog...  that's just not Charlie's style.  What finally got him his good jump was just taking his leash off and letting him fly.  About 10 seconds later the handler caught up enough to throw in the toy.  He tried cutting in line, going from the out to back in...  It wasn't pretty.  Anyways, overall it was a success.  His trainer's right arm is about 4 inches longer than the left after trying to hold him back for an entire hour, but Charlie had a fabulous time and that's really all that matters.  Talk about going from rags to riches!  Don't you just love a good doggie fairy tail?!?!?
